The Socialympics – What to Expect

The Socialympics – What to expect

Friday, July 27, 2012, and ends Sunday, August 12, 2012. This will be a period to monitor closely, if you are not interested in sports alone. The Socialympics. The 2012 Olympics held in London.

Socialympics

Socialympics

In the current days of Social Media it’s hard to imagine how people communicated and interacted – let’s say – 75 years ago.

TV was not invented yet, and the results of the competition reached the audience through radio or newspaper. Newspapers got the news through telegraph messages to get the latest news as quickly as possible.

Nowadays some of the logo designers, hired to make the logo for the sporting event, think marketing / internet / one-eye recognition and come up with a logo that’s clearly inspired by the Internet. Like this Google logo inspired one.

Social Media Coverage.

The analysts predict that some of the events will be followed on live TV by 3,000,000,000 people, roughly 3/7 of the world population. That’s an insane number.

With all that coverage on TV comes the interactions of a lot of those viewers. Now let’s suppose the Olympics 100 meter race and world record for the men will be broken…

Twitter, FaceBook, Google+ and all the other Social Networks will get busy. Very busy. Setting it’s own records in the number of sent and received messages, bandwidth use, posted movies of the records, you name it. As far as I know there were no real plans made on how to deal with that.

Apps Hell.

Mobile networks will suffer from the explosion of data. There are literary hundreds of Apps available to monitor the coming Olympics.

Just imagine tens of thousands of people watching a live event in a stadium and the standing Olympic Record is shattered. Within seconds they will inform their friends and family all over the world, the messages making ripples over the digital globe.

Will you be one of them?

Will you be one of the billions of people messaging about the Olympics and / or broken records? Knowing you a little bit, I would say you will.

It’s very hard to keep silent when you’re excited about something. Burst the Bubble. Poof. By the way… UNRULY started.

Update 07/27/2012 – So far no signs here in Holland about Twitter trouble, FaceBook fails and Google+ gobbled. Phew!

Happy Olympi’ing

Unfortunately, not me. I don’t get into the olympics as a lot of people do. I mean, I might keep up with who’s winning and such but I don’t watch it. :/

    • Hi Bren!
Well I’m not a great viewer of sports, except maybe the short numbers like the men 100 meters. It’s boring to see the Marathon. But this year it’s held ‘just around the corner’ from where I live. London, just 200 mules away. I have never been to London yet. Can you imagine?

Interesting Jan, do you think we may lose some cell connection if there is an overload? It is amazing to think back how news was gathered and delivered vs. today. I may be sharing about a local athlete from our small state who is going for the gold. That would be exciting!

    • Hi Lisa! Well I don’t know if we are going to suffer from that, but I expect a lot of people will be using their phones / IPads and other gadgets on the real popular events. It might or might not give trouble, but it’s something to think about.

Ohw Jan… So it’s gonna be like New Year Festival in my country where our mobile network doesn’t respond even and messages will be delivered after one or two days :D

SInce 2011… Yeah since then I’m online. So this would be my fist experience to see how Olympics go viral online. Until now I enjoyed watching sports on TV. Not a fan of watching ‘em long hours since I’m on to PC, but I will watch quick running events and so.

Few seconds, winner announced and back to my work :D Anyway I don’t message about them with my friends but we get together and talk about em. I prefer that way than messaging stuff, as long as I consider myself as not an reporter or a guy who addicted to sports and world stats.

    Cheers…

    • Hi Mayura.
Big events nowadays cause huge amounts of data outbursts around the world. Remember the revolution in Egypt? That brought Twitter temporarely to shut down. Just imagine when hundreds of thousands of people share that one minute lasting video of the finals in the 100 meters men dash race in – let’s say – the timespan of one minute. Just imagine what amount of data that would be.
I hope I’ll be wrong. By the way… I’m not one of those people that watch every event. For one I have to work sometimes. ;)

Do Netherlands have records in Olympics? :) You will watch ‘em if they have greater chance of winning, nah?

        Cheers…

        • I don’t really know if Holland has some standing Olympic records, I don’t watch that much, to be honest. I like to watch the 100 meter dash for men, womans field hockey (we were Olympic champions several times and women beach volleyball. Do you see a pattern there? lol

The only messaging I’ll be doing will be on facebook :) or twitter, through my computer. :)

But I hope to see quite a bit of the Olympics :)

Very interesting how times have changed eh.

    • It sure is. And this time – for people living in the US – there is a huge time difference to deal with if you wanted to watch something. Six hours on the East Coast to nine hours on the west coast. Guess ya’ll have to get up early in the morning! ;)

It’s so sad. I never could get into the Olympics. or any other sport for that matter. wait, i lie, i do watch the soccer thing every 4 years but only because i put money on it. and the Kentucky derby, cause i put money on that too. otherwise i leave hubby to fill me in and i respond with “oh wow” and “that’s cool” and “ah hum dear” :-D man my twitter stream is going to tick me off during those days. i can see it now.

    • I can see you’re really looking forward to that time, huh? ;) It’s only a once in a 4 year’s thing and maybe that’s just enough for you. I don’t watch to much sports either, but there are some events I like to watch. And no, it’s not the marathon. That’s waaay to long a time for me to watch TV. ;)
